Farming for the future: Dr. Aviani's story

Dr. Ido Aviani's journey in agriculture began during his formative years as a student at the agricultural high-school in Pardes-Hana, Israel. His strong bond with the land set him on a profound path within the farming world. Following his service in the IDF, Aviani devoted multiple years to the care of banana plantations in the fertile Jordan Valley and the cultivation of orchards and vineyards in the captivating Galilee region of Northern Israel.

Driven by his passion, Aviani undertook a transformative venture to California, where he specialized in cultivating organic wine grapes amidst the scenic landscapes of the Sonoma Valley.

Returning to his homeland, he commenced a course of study at the Hebrew University Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot. After ten years of dedication, he completed his doctoral research which focused on agro-ecology and composting.

Reflecting on his experiences, Aviani shares, "My journey as a farmer was marked by significant challenges, prompting me to question the very foundations of our approach to agriculture."

Throughout his journey, Dr. Aviani bore witness to the effects of conventional agriculture on soil fertility and the environment. Simultaneously, he observed the limitations of organic agriculture, often constrained by economic feasibility and bound in a complex web of growing standards that were at times irrelevant.

In both cases, the critical resource of soil biology appeared to be significantly underutilized, despite their pivotal role in influencing agricultural productivity.

In 2016, Dr. Aviani founded 'Aviani Regenerative Agriculture Ltd.' This venture was driven by the ambition to implement regenerative agriculture techniques and technologies, with a resolute commitment to enhancing soil fertility, and increasing commercial farmers profitability.

"We began modestly, armed with little more than a second-hand pickup truck and lots of determination," Aviani recalls. "Our mission was to improve soil fertility and profitability under commercial agricultural conditions."

Over the years, the team gathered invaluable experience, consistently refining their equipment and production methods. With each step, their practice evolved, eventually leading to the establishment of a factory and essential supporting facilities, as well as the formation of a robust network of connections. The trust of local farmers grew, expanding their customer base.

Aviani is encouraged by the willingness of farmers to embrace change and adopt regenerative agriculture practices.

Central to his vision, Aviani provides hands-on support to farmers, focusing on the dual objectives of enhancing soil fertility and profitability while pursuing three fundamental goals:

  1. Enhancing farmers' profitability.

  2. Transforming agriculture from being a contributor to environmental challenges to becoming a solution to the climate crisis.

  3. Producing food with elevated nutritional value.

Dr. Ido Aviani firmly believes that

farmers are the catalysts for change.

Guided by this principle, Aviani Regenerative Agriculture Ltd. strives to be at the forefront of sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices, ushering in a new era of responsible farming and nourishing produce with enhanced quality and nutrition.
